By The Way is an organic smallholding and garden, home of 33 year old Peter Donkey, situated on the north-west boundary tip, and within the New Forest National Park. We are on a very steep, south facing slope at the top of the valley, exposed to the strong, prevailing south westerly winds and bitterly cold south easterlies, but sheltered to the north.
The collection of over two hundred Clematis Montana Group plants represents fifty five named varieties and cultivars and many seedlings found in the garden, particularly over the last two years. The oldest, Clematis montana var. rubens, was planted by me in 1986. New and old montana group cultivars are still being located. Most of the collection have proved hardy and cope well with the frequent strong winds. They have established quickly and flower well. Some routinely flower sporadically throughout the summer.
There are hundreds of other clematis integrated within the garden, many grown from British Clematis Society seed. These add year round clematis interest, colour, height and perfume.
